Acoustics – Hearing protectors

This part of the standard specifies the design and construction assessment, that required to confirm that the device is safe for use and will not cause injury or impairment to the wearer.

It ensures the device is safe for use, does not cause injury or impairment, and uses skin-friendly materials. Some examples of assessments include:

  • Design and construction to ensure wearer safety.

  • Materials must be non-staining and not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

  • Review of user information and manuals for compliance.

  • Testing for durability under dry heat (50°C, 16 hours) and low temperatures (-6°C or -20°C drop test).

The standard rates hearing protectors into five classes (Class 1 to Class 5), based on the SOUND LEVEL CONVERSION (SLC80) rating, indicating the level of noise reduction provided.
